Within Tolerance
Watercolor Paper and PLA
20.5×20.5 in.
2026
Twenty-five tiles form a five-by-five grid, each derived from the same geometric reference. At the center, intersecting paper and PLA planes establish an apparent standard.
Moving outward, every tile follows its instructions precisely: spacing expands and contracts, while orientation changes incrementally. By the corners, the tiles appear to have strayed, though none has broken a rule. The center holds its authority only because it was designated as the reference.
Rendered white on white, the piece is drawn almost entirely by shadow, shifting as the light moves or as a viewer passes. Within Tolerance leaves open the question of where difference ends and error begins.
